Gboard, the popular keyboard app for Android, is experimenting with a fresh new look. A redesigned layout featuring circular and pill-shaped keys is currently being rolled out to a select group of beta testers. This shift moves away from the traditional rounded rectangular keys, giving the keyboard a more modern aesthetic. Individual letter keys are now circular, while functional keys like the space bar have adopted a pill shape, aiming to improve both usability and visual appeal.
This redesign is part of the latest Gboard beta (version 15.1). However, it’s still in the early stages of testing and hasn’t reached all beta users yet.

The Dynamic Color theme has also been streamlined to better integrate with Android’s Material Design principles, creating a more cohesive and modern interface.
These changes aim to revitalize Gboard’s appearance and boost user engagement. However, the reception hasn’t been universally positive. Some users have expressed strong disapproval of the new design.
On Reddit, for instance, users have described the changes as “awful” and “annoying,” with some criticizing the new typography. Similar sentiments have been echoed on X (formerly Twitter), where many users have voiced their dislike for the new key shapes.
Gboard criticism on Reddit.Google hasn’t confirmed when this redesigned keyboard will be available to the general public or if users will have the option to revert to the previous design. It remains to be seen whether Google will incorporate user feedback and adjust the design before a wider release.
Gboard initially launched on iOS in May 2016 and followed with an Android release in December 2016. The keyboard app has since become a staple for many mobile users, offering a range of features including glide typing, voice input, and integrated search. This latest redesign marks a significant visual departure for the platform.
