Google Assistant is undergoing a transformation as it prepares to be replaced by Gemini, Google’s latest AI companion. This transition involves the retirement of several features, impacting users across Android, Nest Hub, and Nest speakers. While some features will integrate into Gemini, others might not have immediate replacements, particularly for devices yet to receive the Gemini update.
Several voice control functionalities related to Google Photos are being discontinued. Users will no longer be able to favorite, share, or inquire about photo locations using voice commands. Google recommends using the Google Photos app for favoriting and sharing, while location information can still be accessed via Smart Displays or tablets. Similarly, adjusting photo frame and ambient screen settings will now require manual adjustments within Smart Display settings, rather than voice control.
A significant change is the discontinuation of live translation through Interpreter Mode. While single word and phrase translations remain accessible, real-time conversational translation will no longer be supported by Google Assistant.

Some features are migrating to Google Routines. Scheduling and listening to Family Bell announcements, along with receiving daily updates from Google Assistant, will now be managed through Routines. Conversely, birthday reminders will no longer be available within Routines and will require direct requests to the Assistant.
Finally, Google Assistant will cease to function on car accessories using Bluetooth or AUX connections. This removal may significantly impact users who rely on these integrations.
While these changes might seem minor to some, the impact will vary across devices. The ongoing rollout of Gemini means certain functionalities may not have direct substitutes, particularly for devices awaiting the update. This transition marks a significant shift in Google’s AI landscape, highlighting the evolving capabilities and integration of its AI assistants.
