Google has quietly extended software support for the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and original Pixel Fold by an additional two years. This means these devices will now receive five years of OS and security updates, matching the commitment made with the launch of the Pixel 8 series.
Previously, the Pixel 6 and 7 series were slated for only three years of OS upgrades, while security updates were guaranteed for five years. This change retroactively extends the OS upgrade window, ensuring these devices receive the latest Android features and security patches for a longer period. The extended support includes new features and upgrades delivered via Pixel Drops. This move aligns with Google’s recent inclusion of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in the Android 16 Developer Preview.

When the Pixel 6 launched, Google announced a shift from the previous three-year support policy to a five-year commitment for security updates. However, OS upgrades remained limited to three years. With the Pixel 8 and 9 series, Google further extended its commitment to seven years for both security and major OS updates.
This latest update, initially spotted by 9to5Google, is officially confirmed on Google’s Pixel support page. The page states, “These phones, including Pixel Fold, will get updates for 5 years starting from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the U.S. This includes 5 years of OS and security updates, and may also include new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops.”
It’s important to note that this extended support does not apply to the Pixel Tablet, which remains on a different update schedule. You can find more information about the Pixel Tablet’s support policy on the dedicated Google support page.
This decision by Google to retroactively extend support is unusual in the industry. It allows users of the Pixel 6, 7, and Fold to enjoy their devices for a significantly longer time, receiving continued software updates and enhancements. This increased longevity provides a compelling reason to hold onto these devices and reinforces Google’s commitment to long-term software support for its Pixel lineup.
