Google Messages is developing a new feature that will allow users to unsend messages, similar to WhatsApp. This functionality will enable users to delete messages from both their own devices and the recipients’ devices, offering a way to retract unwanted messages.
This feature, however, comes with a 15-minute time limit. This window allows users to correct typos or quickly retract messages sent in haste. After the 15-minute window, the message will remain on all devices.
The exact release date of this feature is still uncertain. Android Authority discovered this feature in development last month and has been experimenting with it in developer mode.
Currently, the unsend feature only works if the recipient also has the updated version of the Google Messages app. During testing, the developer model explicitly states that messages will only be deleted from devices with the newer version.
This version compatibility issue may be addressed before the official rollout. However, because this feature relies on recent updates to the RCS Universal Profile, ensuring compatibility across all devices might present a challenge.
According to Android Authority’s testers, it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact release date, but the observed development progress suggests positive momentum. The fact that this feature is accessible to developers on public versions of the app indicates a potential release in the near future.
While the 15-minute window might be limiting, the ability to unsend messages at all represents a significant improvement for Google Messages users. It provides a much-needed safety net for those inevitable moments of miscommunication or regret.
