Google has officially launched its AI-powered Scam Detection feature for both calls and messages on Pixel phones, bolstering user protection against increasingly sophisticated fraud attempts. This follows a three-month beta testing period and addresses the growing problem of scams that cost smartphone users millions of dollars annually.

AI-Powered Call Screening

Leveraging the on-device Gemini Nano AI, Pixel phones now analyze ongoing calls in real time. If the AI identifies suspicious patterns, it alerts the user through audio cues, haptic feedback, and an on-screen notification. This proactive approach complements existing spam call blocking by focusing on mid-conversation tactics often employed by scammers.

Google collaborated with financial institutions to understand common scam strategies. The system flags potentially dangerous situations, such as requests for sensitive banking information, pressure to install apps, offers of free gifts, or attempts to move the conversation to a different platform.

Initially, Scam Detection for calls is available for Pixel 9 series users in the US, supporting English language conversations. While tested on older Pixel models with other AI models, Google found the on-device Gemini Nano AI to be the most effective solution. Importantly, the feature only activates for unsaved numbers and operates entirely on-device, ensuring no audio recordings are stored or transmitted to cloud servers. It’s also disabled by default and can be deactivated during a call.

Google emphasizes that this feature aims to address evolving scam tactics. “Traditional spam protections are focused on protecting users before the conversation starts, and are less effective against these latest tactics from scammers that turn dangerous mid-conversation and use social engineering techniques,” Google explains.

Enhanced Message Security

Building upon existing spam reporting tools within the Google Messages app, Scam Detection now extends to text-based communication. The on-device AI analyzes SMS, MMS, and RCS conversations, alerting users to potentially fraudulent patterns.

Similar to call screening, message analysis occurs entirely on-device. Only if a user flags a sender as fraudulent are details and messages shared with Google and carriers. Unlike the call feature, Scam Detection in Messages is enabled by default but can be turned off at any time. This feature is rolling out to English-speaking users in the US, UK, and Canada.

Conclusion

Google’s new Scam Detection features for calls and messages represent a significant advancement in protecting Pixel users from fraud. By leveraging the power of on-device AI, these features provide real-time analysis and alerts, addressing the evolving tactics of scammers. The focus on privacy, with on-device processing and user control over data sharing, further strengthens user trust and security.
