Smartphones have become ubiquitous, impacting even the youngest members of our society. Concerns surrounding mental health, body image, inappropriate content, and digital addiction are valid and require thoughtful solutions. HMD Global aims to address these challenges with the Fusion X1, a smartphone designed specifically for children, offering a safe and controlled digital experience.

HMD boasts operating system-level parental controls built directly into the Fusion X1. These controls empower parents to customize app access, manage internet browsing, set limits for social media use, and establish screen time boundaries. The cornerstone of this safety-focused approach is the Xplora app, providing parents with real-time control over device settings and usage adjustments.

Parents can remotely access their child’s Fusion X1 through the Xplora app and utilize the emergency SOS calling feature for added peace of mind. A dedicated School Mode restricts access to specific apps and features, minimizing distractions during school hours.

Despite its focus on safety, the Fusion X1 isn’t lacking in hardware capabilities. It features a powerful 108-megapixel camera and a robust 5,000mAh battery designed for all-day use. Surprisingly, HMD has also included a 3.5mm headphone jack, a welcome addition for many users.

The Fusion X1 sports a 6.56-inch display with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. Powering the device is Qualcomm’s entry-level Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 SoC, coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage.

HMD is also introducing “outfits,” modular accessories that attach to the phone’s rear shell via a pin-based connector system. These accessories include options like a ring light, a rugged case with a built-in battery, and a gamepad, enhancing the phone’s versatility.

The HMD Fusion X1 is priced at GBP 229 (approximately $288) and is expected to launch around April or May, with regional availability varying. This device offers a compelling solution for parents seeking a balance between providing their children with access to technology and ensuring their online safety.
