Humane has officially discontinued its AI Pin wearable, ending sales and server connectivity after a mere year on the market. This follows HP’s acquisition of Humane’s assets for a reported $116 million, a significant drop from the $750 million to $1 billion Humane reportedly sought last year.
The AI Pin, launched with considerable fanfare, promised a revolutionary AI-powered experience. It lacked a traditional display, projecting information onto the user’s hand and relying on voice commands. Priced at $699 with a mandatory $24 monthly subscription, the device failed to live up to expectations.
From Hype to Disappointment
Early reviews highlighted the AI Pin’s limited and buggy functionality, leading to widespread disappointment. Prominent tech reviewers like MKBHD called it “the worst product I’ve ever reviewed,” while MaagX described it as a “miserable smartphone replacement.” Poor sales ultimately sealed the device’s fate.
End of Life for the AI Pin
Humane’s announcement confirmed the “winding down” of the AI Pin, effective immediately. New purchases are halted, and server connectivity will cease on February 28, 2025, at 12 p.m. PT. All user data will be permanently deleted.
Limited Refunds Offered
While unfulfilled orders will be refunded, those who purchased the AI Pin more than 90 days prior to the announcement are ineligible for reimbursement. Only purchases made after November 15, 2024, qualify for a refund, which must be requested by February 27, 2025.
A Bold Experiment Cut Short
Humane’s ambition to push the boundaries of wearable technology is commendable. However, the premature launch of the AI Pin ultimately led to its demise. While early adopters may be disappointed, the company’s willingness to innovate should be acknowledged. The AI Pin serves as a reminder that even with significant investment and marketing, a product’s success hinges on delivering a compelling user experience.
