Instagram is experimenting with a new feature: a private “dislike” button for comments. This button, currently in testing, aims to improve the overall tone of conversations on the platform. The feature was initially spotted by Threads user @crystalotv, who shared a screenshot showcasing the down arrow icon nestled beside the existing like button.
Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, officially confirmed the test via Threads. He emphasized the button’s private nature, stating that there will be no public dislike count, and neither the commenter nor other users will be notified of a dislike. This discreet feedback mechanism is designed to empower users to express their disapproval of inappropriate or unhelpful comments without fear of public backlash.
The primary goal, according to Mosseri, is to foster a more positive and respectful comment environment. While the dislike count remains hidden, Instagram may eventually utilize this data to prioritize comments. Disliked comments could be downranked, pushing them lower in the thread and giving more visibility to constructive contributions. This approach mirrors other platforms that leverage user feedback to moderate content and improve the user experience.
This new functionality resonates with features like Discord’s “Ignore” button, which allows users to mute unwanted interactions without directly blocking the individual. Mosseri himself highlighted the similarity, referring to the dislike button as a “soupped up ‘restrict'” feature for Instagram and Threads.
