The first-generation Kindle Scribe, Amazon’s e-reader with handwriting capabilities, is receiving a significant update, bridging the gap between it and the newer 2024 model. This update brings two highly anticipated features: Active Canvas and AI-powered summarization, previously exclusive to the 2024 Scribe.

Active Canvas revolutionizes note-taking on the Kindle Scribe. This feature allows users to write directly on any page of their Kindle library books, mimicking the experience of annotating a physical book. Notes appear in a resizable box, anchored to the relevant text, and remain correctly positioned even when the font size is adjusted. This eliminates the previous confusion of notes appearing at the top of the page, regardless of their context within the text. The update also introduces underlining as a highlighting option, snapping neatly to the text for a cleaner, more organized appearance.

The second major addition is AI-powered summarization. This feature enhances the existing handwriting recognition by converting handwritten notes into a more legible format while retaining a handwritten aesthetic. Furthermore, generative AI is employed to organize and synthesize these notes, making it easier to review and understand key takeaways. While the 2024 model boasts Extended Margins for lengthier notes, this feature is not included in the update for the older Scribe.

Owners of the first-generation Kindle Scribe should receive an automatic notification prompting them to install the update. Alternatively, the update can be manually installed through the “Update Your Kindle” option in the device settings.

This update significantly enhances the functionality of the first-generation Kindle Scribe, bringing its user experience closer to that of the 2024 model. For budget-conscious consumers, the older model now offers excellent value. However, those prioritizing aesthetics might still prefer the 2024 Scribe with its sleek green finish, despite the slightly higher price point.
