Samsung teased its upcoming slim phone, the Galaxy S25 Edge, at the Galaxy S25 launch. Rumored to be under 6mm thick, it’s poised to be Samsung’s thinnest candy bar phone, potentially rivaling the still-rumored iPhone 17 Air. New leaks suggest the Galaxy S25 Edge might achieve its lighter weight by revisiting an older design choice: a ceramic back.
According to an exclusive report from SamMobile, Samsung is reportedly ditching the traditional glass back in favor of ceramic, complemented by an aluminum frame. This shift could significantly impact the phone’s durability and weight. While it’s unclear whether the back will be entirely ceramic or a glass-ceramic hybrid, the report suggests a ceramic back would be both lighter and more durable than even reinforced glass.
A Blast from the Past: The Return of Ceramic
HTC U12 Plus Review
Ceramic backs on phones aren’t entirely new. In the late 2010s, brands like LG, Essential, HTC, and Xiaomi experimented with ceramic in their flagship models. Samsung itself released a ceramic version of the Galaxy S10 Plus in 2019, which proved more durable than its glass counterpart. Despite this, ceramic never gained widespread adoption due to its complex and costly manufacturing process.
The Science Behind Ceramic Durability
Ceramics are a class of materials with a crystalline structure at the molecular level. This structure makes them rigid, thin, and light. While anything made of clay and fired in a kiln technically qualifies as ceramic (including porcelain), the ceramics used in gadgets like the S10 Plus are more advanced and require extensive engineering. Manufacturers often use Zirconia (zirconium dioxide), a material also used in jewelry and dental implants. It remains to be seen which type of ceramic Samsung will choose for the S25 Edge.
Premium Positioning and Potential Price
By incorporating ceramic, Samsung could position the Galaxy S25 Edge above the base and Plus models, potentially pricing it similarly to the S25 Ultra. The S25 Edge is expected to match the Ultra in performance and camera capabilities. However, its thin profile might concern users who prioritize extended video recording or gaming sessions.
Waiting for Confirmation
The Galaxy S25 Edge is rumored to launch in Q2 2025. We’ll have to wait a few more months for official confirmation from Samsung regarding the materials and final design.
