The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, set to be unveiled next week, is rumored to be the world’s thinnest smartphone at a mere 5.8mm. Alongside its anticipated dual camera system featuring a 200MP main telephoto lens, the S25 Edge will also premiere the latest in screen protection technology: Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2. This innovation addresses the durability challenges often associated with slim and foldable displays.

Next-Gen Protection for Ultra-Thin Smartphones

Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 succeeds the original Ceramic glass, which has been a mainstay in premium smartphones and recently featured in flip phones like the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025. This new generation enhances durability and crack deflection, a crucial feature for ultra-thin devices like the S25 Edge and the upcoming iPhone 17 Air.

Kwangjin Bae, Samsung EVP and Head of Mechanical R&D of Mobile, highlighted the importance of this new material:

“Galaxy S25 Edge will set a new standard for craftsmanship and performance as our slimmest Galaxy S series device yet. To support this breakthrough design, it was essential to develop a display material that was both exceptionally thin and reliably strong.”

Enhanced Strength Through Crystal Integration

The enhanced protection of Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 comes from crystals embedded within the glass matrix, further strengthened by Corning’s ion exchange process. This combination allows for thinner smartphone designs without compromising structural integrity.

Andrew Beck, Vice President and GM at Corning Gorilla Glass, emphasized the benefits of this new technology:

“With Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, we’ve achieved a remarkable combination of thinness and strength, giving consumers the best of both worlds — exceptional durability in a modern, sleek and premium design.”

The Future of Thin Smartphone Design

While the S25 Edge is the first to feature Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, it remains to be seen if this protection will be exclusive to Samsung. With the trend towards increasingly thinner devices, including the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 7, this technology could become a crucial component for future smartphones. Samsung and Corning have yet to release detailed information about the durability improvements offered by the new glass.
