The smartphone industry is embracing thinness this year. Oppo is set to release the world’s thinnest foldable phone, while rumors surrounding Apple’s iPhone 17 Air continue to circulate. Samsung, however, has already showcased its Galaxy S25 Edge. Impressively, this ultra-thin phone doesn’t appear to compromise on features as much as initially anticipated. A recent leak, claiming “confirmed” hardware details, suggests the Galaxy S25 Edge will boast a 200-megapixel rear camera.
This is a remarkable choice, as such high-resolution sensors are typically reserved for the premium Galaxy S Ultra series. Beyond the discussions about value, integrating a 200-megapixel sensor into the slender Galaxy S25 Edge is a significant engineering achievement.
This isn’t entirely unexpected, though. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, its thinnest foldable to date, also features a 200-megapixel camera despite its slim design. Unlike the flat Galaxy S25 Ultra, which also houses a 200-megapixel sensor, the Galaxy S25 Edge features a noticeable camera island bump with protruding lenses.
Oppo has also achieved a similar feat with its upcoming Find N5, incorporating a triple-rear camera system, including a periscope zoom lens, into a device just over four millimeters thick when unfolded.
Beyond the hardware demonstration at its Unpacked event, Samsung remains tight-lipped about the Galaxy S25 Edge. The recent leak suggests an armor aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 display protection. The display is rumored to support Samsung’s adaptive refresh rate technology, ranging from 1-120Hz for a balance of smoothness and energy efficiency. A vapor chamber cooling system is reportedly included for thermal management, alongside 25W wired charging.
Given the metallic design and thin profile, wireless charging seems unlikely. However, Oppo’s Find N5 foldable offers 50W wireless charging, leaving room for a potential surprise from Samsung.
It’s important to note that the Galaxy S25 Edge isn’t positioned as a budget-friendly or spec-heavy flagship. Instead, it showcases innovation and engineering prowess. Therefore, it’s wise to manage expectations accordingly.
