The next generation of Samsung flagship phones, the Galaxy S25 series, is rumored to support the Qi2 wireless charging standard. However, this support may come with a twist. Early reports suggest that Qi2 compatibility might be limited to a new magnetic case that Samsung is developing, rather than being natively integrated into the devices themselves.
This news comes from a report by Finnish publication Suomimobiili, which claims that Samsung will produce a dedicated magnetic case for the Galaxy S25 lineup to enable Qi2 charging. This would be a first for Samsung’s flagship phones, as the company has not previously offered such a case. This development is particularly interesting given Samsung’s previous concerns about magnetic cases potentially interfering with the S Pen functionality, especially on the Ultra models. If the report is true, it seems Samsung has overcome this technical hurdle.
However, this report contradicts another recent report that suggested the Galaxy S25 series would feature native Qi2 support. This discrepancy raises questions about which scenario is more likely.
The Qi2 wireless charging standard, unveiled at CES 2023 by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), aims to establish a universal standard for enhanced wireless charging across mobile devices. Offering faster speeds, improved efficiency, and greater versatility compared to its predecessor, Qi, the standard also maintains backward compatibility with existing Qi-certified devices.
Despite the promise of Qi2, native adoption among Android devices has been slow. While Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series boast native Qi2 support, Android manufacturers like OnePlus and Oppo have resorted to magnetic cases for their latest flagships, the OnePlus 13 and Oppo Find X8 Pro, respectively, to provide Qi2 compatibility.
Given Apple’s embrace of Qi2 in its recent iPhones and the standard’s availability for nearly two years, it would be surprising if Samsung didn’t incorporate native support into its flagship Galaxy S25 lineup. As a leading Android manufacturer, Samsung is often at the forefront of adopting new technologies.
The Galaxy S25 series is anticipated to launch around January 22nd, likely comprising the standard Galaxy S25, the Galaxy S25 Plus, and the Galaxy S25 Ultra, similar to the Galaxy S24 series. Whether these devices will offer true native Qi2 support or rely on a dedicated case remains a key question leading up to the official announcement.
