Over the weekend, numerous second-generation Chromecast devices unexpectedly stopped functioning, leaving users bewildered. Reddit threads quickly filled with frustrated owners, revealing a clear pattern: the outage exclusively impacted second-generation models, while first and third-generation Chromecasts remained unaffected.
Initially, many speculated that Google had discontinued support for the older devices. However, Google has confirmed its awareness of the issue and is actively working on a resolution, assuring users that support for the second-gen Chromecast is not ending. The exact cause remains unclear, but the problem appears to originate on Google’s end, requiring a server-side fix rather than user intervention.

According to Reddit user u/tchebb, the disruption stems from the expiration of the Chromecast’s device authentication certificate. By analyzing Chrome error logs, u/tchebb identified an expired intermediate certificate authority (CA) as the likely culprit. The CA’s expiration date was set for March 9, 2025, and it seems to have triggered the widespread outage.
Attempting to cast content to the affected Chromecasts results in an error message: “Untrusted device: [name] couldn’t be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware.” This error effectively halts the casting process, leaving users unable to proceed. The issue reportedly affects apps like YouTube, adding to user frustration, particularly as some Pixel owners are also experiencing screen brightness problems following a recent update.
It’s important to reiterate that this error message does not signify the end of support for second-generation Chromecast devices. Google has explicitly confirmed the problem and is working diligently on a solution. While Google has a history of discontinuing products, they typically announce end-of-life dates well in advance. For instance, Google announced the end of support for the first-gen Chromecast in May 2023, yet those devices continue to function.
Hopefully, Google will swiftly resolve the current issue, restoring functionality to affected Chromecast devices and allowing users to resume their streaming experience without further interruption.
