For the past few years, my primary computer has been an iPad Pro, starting with the groundbreaking M1 model. Recently, I revisited my 2021 M1 iPad Pro to evaluate its performance with demanding modern applications, particularly those leveraging advanced graphics and AI. The question is, can this four-year-old tablet still hold its own in 2025? The answer is a resounding yes.

The Only Caveat: Battery Life

The only noticeable issue I encountered with the M1 iPad Pro is the expected battery degradation. The M1 chip’s efficiency initially provided all-day battery life. However, after four years, the battery health has declined to 86%, necessitating Low Power Mode and reduced brightness to achieve similar results. While this isn’t unexpected for a device of this age, it’s worth noting.

While Apple targets 80% battery health after 1,000 charging cycles, performance optimizations can impact demanding tasks like video editing and gaming. In my testing, noticeable slowdowns only occurred during resource-intensive processes. Overall, the battery still provides 5-6 hours of continuous work on a single charge, which remains impressive for a four-year-old device.

Performance: Still Impressively Smooth

After switching to the M4 iPad Pro with its stunning OLED display, returning to the M1’s 11-inch LCD felt like a minor adjustment. While the M4’s display offers superior contrast and brightness, the M1’s screen remains excellent for image editing, sketching, and gaming. Adding a matte screen protector enhanced stylus control and reduced glare.

Surprisingly, the M1 iPad Pro’s performance remains remarkably smooth. App switching, UI transitions, and general responsiveness are all excellent. While video export times are slightly longer compared to the M4 model, the difference is minimal. Even demanding apps like LumaFusion and DaVinci Resolve performed admirably.

Gaming performance is equally impressive. Most App Store titles run flawlessly at the highest graphics settings. Even demanding games like Death Stranding and Resident Evil Village are playable with minor adjustments to graphics presets. Overall, the M1 iPad Pro’s performance suggests it will remain a capable device for years to come.

Software: A Familiar Landscape

iPadOS remains a divisive operating system. Its streamlined nature offers a snappy and efficient workflow, but it lacks the flexibility of macOS or Windows. The M1 iPad Pro, much like its successors, highlights this duality. It excels in specific workflows but isn’t a universal replacement for a traditional computer.

All functionalities available on the M4 iPad Pro, including legacy apps and those utilizing AI features, are also accessible on the M1 model. The device continues to receive software updates, ensuring compatibility with the latest features. Stage Manager, a feature that allows for external display connectivity and multitasking, offers enhanced productivity, especially when paired with AR smart glasses.

While the M1 iPad Pro remains a compelling device, newer models like the M4 and M2 offer enhanced features. The latest iPad Air with the M3 chip also provides excellent value. Regardless of your choice, Apple’s iPad Pro lineup delivers a powerful and future-proof tablet experience.
