United Airlines is accelerating the deployment of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet across its fleet, aiming to offer free, high-speed Wi-Fi to passengers. Testing is slated to begin in February, with the first commercial flight featuring Starlink connectivity expected this spring.
United’s Starlink Integration Plan
The Embraer E-175 will be the first aircraft type to receive the Starlink upgrade, followed by the rest of United’s two-cabin regional fleet by the end of 2025. The airline plans to eventually equip its entire fleet with Starlink, becoming the first major US carrier to do so. This free Wi-Fi service will be available to all MileagePlus loyalty program members. Richard Nunn, head of MileagePlus, emphasized the program’s focus on adding Starlink to as many aircraft as possible, as quickly as possible.

Other Airlines Embracing Starlink
While United is a significant player, other airlines have already adopted Starlink. Hawaiian Airlines began offering free Starlink Wi-Fi on its Airbus A330 fleet in September 2024, covering flights across Asia, Oceania, and the US. Qatar Airways followed suit in October 2024, launching Starlink service on its Boeing 777s, with plans to expand across its entire fleet, also at no cost to passengers. AirBaltic has also confirmed its intention to equip its fleet with Starlink.
Starlink’s Aviation Ambitions
SpaceX’s Starlink has secured deals with several international carriers to provide fast, low-latency in-flight internet. Initially targeting speeds up to 350 Mbps with its Aero Terminal kit, Starlink for Aviation currently promises downlink speeds up to 220 Mbps and uplink speeds up to 25 Mbps per terminal. This bandwidth supports not only basic communication but also activities like calling, video streaming, and online gaming.
Beyond commercial airlines, Starlink is exploring opportunities with private charter services and government agencies for specialized missions. The company is also partnering with T-Mobile to test direct-to-cell satellite connectivity for mobile phones in the coming months.
