WhatsApp chats have become essential for various purposes, from casual conversations to crucial communication during protests and emergencies. However, chat leaks pose a significant risk to users’ privacy and safety. To address this, WhatsApp is introducing Advanced Chat Privacy, a new feature designed to prevent chat exports and enhance user control over information sharing.
This new feature offers two key privacy enhancements: preventing chat exports and disabling automatic media downloads. By blocking the ability to export chat records, WhatsApp aims to mitigate the risks associated with leaks. This applies to both group chats and individual conversations, offering comprehensive protection. Furthermore, the feature disables the automatic download of photos and videos in group chats, providing users greater control over the media stored on their devices and reducing the risk of unwanted content being shared outside the group.

This added layer of control ensures that shared content remains within the intended audience, fostering a more secure communication environment. WhatsApp believes this measure will bolster user confidence, ensuring conversations remain private and contained within the app.
Controlling Meta AI Integration
In addition to preventing leaks, Advanced Chat Privacy also addresses concerns surrounding the integration of Meta AI within WhatsApp. Introduced earlier this year, Meta AI allows users to interact with a chatbot and generate images within the platform. While potentially useful for businesses, this feature can lead to unwanted spam and disruptions in group chats. Recent incidents on other social media platforms demonstrate how AI chatbots can inadvertently fuel controversy and escalate tensions.
Furthermore, the presence of Meta AI has drawn regulatory scrutiny. While Meta maintains that the AI feature is optional and cannot read personal messages, user interactions with the chatbot are used for AI training purposes. This data collection practice has raised concerns from privacy advocates and regulators, including the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office. Meta claims it is actively seeking user feedback and views the AI integration as a beneficial option, but concerns regarding data usage and privacy implications remain.

Enabling Advanced Chat Privacy
Activating this enhanced privacy feature is straightforward. Users can enable Advanced Chat Privacy by accessing the chat settings, which can be found by tapping on the chat name at the top of the screen. Within the settings, the feature can be toggled to the “On” position. The rollout of Advanced Chat Privacy is currently underway for all WhatsApp users on both Android and iOS platforms via a new app update.
This new feature represents a significant step towards bolstering user privacy and control within WhatsApp. By addressing both the risk of leaks and the potential downsides of AI integration, WhatsApp aims to create a more secure and user-centric communication platform.
