Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, is blocking links to the encrypted messaging app, Signal. This issue, initially reported by tech journalist Matt Binder on his Substack blog, has been confirmed by MaagX. All links containing the “Signal.me” URL identifier are currently restricted on X.

Signal, like WhatsApp with its “WA.me” links, uses “Signal.me” URLs for direct message sharing. This allows users to click a link and instantly enter a one-on-one chat. However, attempts to share these links on X, both in public posts and direct messages, result in an error message. The message fails to send without any explanation. When attempting to add a Signal link to an X bio, the error message flags the “Signal.me” link as potential malware.

Even previously shared Signal links on X are now blocked, with a warning suggesting the link might be malicious, spam, misleading, or violate X policies. X has not officially commented on the reason behind this restriction.

Interestingly, X doesn’t appear to be keyword-blocking “Signal.” Sharing a Signal username in posts and direct messages functions without issue.

Binder speculates the block may be connected to former government employees, dismissed by Musk’s DOGE agency, attempting to share information anonymously with journalists as whistleblowers.

This isn’t the first instance of X blocking links to other platforms. In 2020, X restricted links to competitors like Instagram, Mastodon, and Facebook. Musk stated at the time, “Casually sharing occasional links is fine, but no more relentless advertising of competitors for free.” The restrictions were lifted shortly after facing criticism, including from former CEO Jack Dorsey.

Signal has been a popular choice for journalists, activists, and whistleblowers due to its robust security features. The open-source platform offers default end-to-end encryption and strong account and identity verification tools, protecting users from identity exposure, persecution, and harassment. The blocking of Signal links on X raises concerns about access to secure communication and information sharing.
