Discord, the popular communication platform for gamers, is set to introduce video ads on its mobile app this summer. Unlike intrusive ads on other social media platforms, Discord’s “Video Quests” offer users a choice to watch sponsored videos in exchange for rewards such as in-game items and avatar decorations.
This move expands the existing Video Quests feature from the desktop version to mobile. Users will see a Quest bar at the bottom of the screen, which, when tapped, leads to a dedicated Quest tab where they can choose to watch full-screen video ads. Those who prefer an ad-free experience can simply dismiss the Quest bar. This opt-in approach mirrors the reward-based ad system used in some mobile games, offering players a way to earn in-game benefits by watching short videos.

Discord’s product leader, Peter Sellis, explains that the expansion to mobile is part of a broader strategy to attract gaming brand partners. While the introduction of Video Quests on PC last year sparked some debate among users accustomed to Discord’s ad-free environment, Sellis emphasizes Discord’s commitment to creating a “player-centric advertising platform.” He sees the mobile expansion as a natural progression, providing brand partners access to Discord’s highly engaged mobile audience while offering users valuable rewards.
This announcement follows recent news of Discord’s discussions with investment banks regarding a potential initial public offering (IPO). Currently valued at $15 billion, Discord has also been actively enhancing its platform with new features, such as the ability to discreetly ignore other users.
The rollout of Video Quests on mobile is scheduled for June 2025.
