The Acer Aspire Vero 16, a carbon-neutral laptop designed for easy repair, is making waves in the tech world. Announced as part of Acer’s CES 2025 lineup, this eco-conscious machine boasts a chassis constructed with 70% post-consumer recycled plastic and a unique bio-based material derived from oyster shells. This innovative approach gives the term “clamshell PC” a whole new meaning.
The Aspire Vero 16 is powered by Intel Core Ultra 200H processors, offering configurations with up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. Integrated Intel Arc graphics provide visual power, while a 1440p webcam with a privacy shutter, a fingerprint reader, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and an HDMI 2.1 port ensure convenient connectivity. The laptop features a 16-inch display with 100% sRGB color gamut support and slim bezels for an immersive viewing experience.

As a mid-range laptop, the Aspire Vero 16 doesn’t boast top-tier specifications. Its 65W X-cell Li-ion battery provides up to 10.5 hours of battery life. While this is respectable, it falls short of the 20+ hours offered by some Apple silicon and Snapdragon PCs. Acer promotes the Vero 16 as a “green but mean” machine. However, expanding carbon offsetting to their entire PC range would significantly amplify their environmental impact.
The laptop’s design visually embodies its recycled composition, featuring specks of dark gray and green across the chassis. The phrase “For planet Earth” is etched into the bottom of the hinge, further emphasizing its eco-friendly focus.
While the use of oyster shell material is intriguing, it constitutes only about 1% of the chassis. This small percentage raises questions about its practical impact versus its marketing value. Hopefully, Acer will clarify its purpose and elaborate on the “easily repairable” aspects of the design.

Despite the questions surrounding the oyster shell material, the Aspire Vero 16’s commitment to sustainable design without sacrificing performance has earned it a CES Innovation Award Honoree. The laptop will launch in the U.S. in April with a starting price of $800.
Acer also unveiled new all-in-one and compact PCs alongside the Vero 16, as well as a promising new gaming monitor, demonstrating their continued innovation across multiple product categories.
