This information originates from an anonymous source who spoke on the Upgrade podcast, hosted by Myke Hurley and Jason Snell. According to the source, Apple’s roadmap involves launching an M3 iPad Air with the enhanced 90Hz panel first. This would be followed by a 24-inch iMac and then a 27-inch Studio Display, both featuring the same display upgrade.
The potential shift to a 90Hz refresh rate would be a welcome improvement, particularly for the Studio Display. Since its release in March 2022, this high-end monitor has remained untouched, making a refresh overdue. While still a rumor, the prospect of a smoother, more responsive visual experience is generating considerable excitement.
The source on the Upgrade podcast reportedly stated, “I have news on screen improvements for the next generation of the M3 iPad Air. Apple is working on a higher refresh rate LCD display with a new liquid motion panel fixed at around 90Hz. They’re also working on expanding it to other models or products like a 24-inch iMac and a next-gen Studio Display.” All three devices currently operate with a standard 60Hz refresh rate.
This rumor comes amid industry speculation about Apple’s display technology advancements. Analyst Ross Young previously linked the iPhone 17 series with a 120Hz ProMotion display, marking another instance of Apple exploring higher refresh rates. Bloomberg also predicted an early 2025 launch for the next iPad Air.
Considering Apple’s recent release of the 24-inch iMac with the M4 chip, a new model seems unlikely until next year.
