OpenAI’s post-training researcher, Manuka Stratta, highlighted the improvements in a recent video. The update focuses on refining the “personality” of Advanced Voice Mode, minimizing interruptions and allowing users more time to formulate their thoughts without feeling pressured to fill silences. Stratta emphasized that the update also contributes to a more engaging and natural tone, making ChatGPT’s voice more direct and concise.
Advanced Voice Mode was initially introduced for select ChatGPT Plus subscribers in May of last year, later expanding to all Plus users in September. By November, OpenAI broadened access to all Pro and free users via the mobile app, enabling voice input for a wider audience.
Accessing Advanced Voice Mode is straightforward: open the ChatGPT mobile app and tap the sound-wave icon next to the microphone. A circle will appear, signaling that ChatGPT is actively listening and ready for conversation. While the voice sounds remarkably human-like, it’s crucial to remember that it’s still generative AI. Therefore, users should exercise caution and avoid sharing sensitive personal information.
Free users utilize Advanced Voice Mode powered by the GPT-4o mini AI model, with usage capped at a variable daily limit. ChatGPT Plus subscribers ($20/month) benefit from longer conversations and the more advanced GPT-4o model, offering enhanced understanding, response quality, and reasoning. Pro subscribers ($200/month) enjoy unlimited usage.
