During Qualcomm’s Q1 2025 earnings webcast, CEO Cristiano Amon revealed that Snapdragon X chips powered over 10% of Windows laptops priced above $800 sold in the US between October and December 2024. This represents a significant jump from the reported 0.8% market share in Q3 2024.
This 10% figure, however, applies specifically to US consumer sales of Windows laptops exceeding $800. It doesn’t encompass all PCs, all laptops, or even all Windows laptops. While this specificity adds credibility to the claim, it also limits the scope of Qualcomm’s achievement.
Despite these limitations, the growth is noteworthy for Qualcomm, a relatively new entrant in the PC market. The Snapdragon X chip has garnered significant attention, propelling the adoption of Windows on Arm and offering substantially improved battery life compared to x86 counterparts.
Qualcomm’s ambitious goal of securing 50% of the Windows PC market by 2029 may seem distant, but the recent growth suggests potential. The next few years will be crucial in determining whether Qualcomm can maintain this momentum and challenge the established players in the PC market.
While the current market share is confined to a specific segment, it signifies a positive trend for Qualcomm. The company’s focus on performance and battery life could be key factors in attracting more consumers and expanding its presence in the broader PC market.
