The highly anticipated Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, lauded as one of the best CPUs available, sold out within minutes of its initial release. Our Ryzen 7 9800X3D review highlights its exceptional performance, making the rapid sell-out unsurprising. However, this scarcity has created an opportunity for scalpers, with eBay listings appearing almost immediately at inflated prices.
Many “preorder” listings on eBay are asking over $900 for the CPU, significantly higher than its $479 MSRP. These aren’t preorders in the traditional sense. Instead, scalpers are buying the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at retail price and reselling it at a substantial markup. While most listings remain unsold, one buyer secured a chip for $564.
Despite the current inflated prices, some fortunate buyers managed to purchase the CPU at its retail price. Several users on the AMD subreddit reported successful purchases from Newegg and Amazon just as listings went live. However, the CPU quickly went out of stock on these platforms. Newegg, Amazon, and B&H Photo currently list the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but all are out of stock.
Even AMD’s official online store, which limited purchases to one unit per customer, is currently sold out. One retailer, however, still offers the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at its MSRP: Micro Center. Continuing its usual practice for high-demand launches, Micro Center is selling the CPU exclusively in-store. If you’re fortunate enough to live near a Micro Center, you might be able to acquire the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at retail price, at least for the next few days.
While scalpers are currently driving up prices, this situation is unlikely to persist. New hardware releases often occur in waves, and as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D becomes more readily available, secondhand market prices should decrease. Given the speed of the initial sell-out, however, it may take several months for prices to fully stabilize.
