The European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is prompting changes in how tech giants operate, and Microsoft’s Windows 11 Start Menu Search is the latest to get a makeover. This update, currently rolling out to users in the European Economic Area (EEA), focuses on clearer labeling to differentiate between web and local search results, as reported by Tech Radar. This move aligns with broader changes empowering users to uninstall Edge and disable Bing integration, emphasizing transparency and user choice.
These updates are visible in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build, build 27764. An X user, @alex290292, shared a screenshot showcasing the redesigned Start menu interface with distinct “Windows” and “Web search from Bing” sections. This enhanced control over Windows 11 is a welcome change. Specifically, users can now add custom web search providers to Windows Search, remove the Edge browser entirely, and deactivate Bing web search.
So, what exactly is the EU’s DMA? It’s a set of regulations designed to prevent large tech companies from abusing their market dominance to stifle competition. These rules compel Microsoft to offer more flexibility and avoid forcing users to rely solely on their services.
Additional improvements are also on the horizon, including a new “jump list” accessible by right-clicking on a pinned app. This feature provides quick access to recent folders, files, and tasks associated with the app, whether you right-click on the Start menu or taskbar. While Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed a wider rollout beyond the EEA, it’s a feature many users are hoping to see. Beyond these search enhancements, Microsoft is also testing an improved Windows Search experience on Copilot+.
The DMA’s impact on user experience is becoming increasingly apparent. By giving users more control over their search experience and default applications, Microsoft is taking a step towards greater transparency and choice within Windows 11. These changes reflect a growing trend towards user empowerment in the digital landscape.
